MENA Forum - Have your say
“Noor-mania”
For the few people who don't know; “Noor” or “Gumus” is a Turkish soap opera, which aired on Saudi channel MBC throughout the summer and proved to be a huge sensation in the Arab World.
It is believed that a whopping 85 million viewers watched the translated Turkish soap opera throughout the Arab World. MBC estimates that in Saudi Arabia alone, 3 to 4 million viewers waited eagerly for the show on a daily basis.
The show, which was originally aired in 2005 on Kanal D, flopped in Turkey. So, why did it have such a huge success in the Arab world? Is it because of an elaborate marketing scheme used by MBC or is it something else?
It is believed that “Noor”, which means “light” in Arabic, offered Arab viewers something different than what Arab soap operas normally offer. The show is more moderate and open. Although some scenes were censored, nonetheless it shows the characters kissing, taking alcohol and partying. It was also translated into the Syrian dialect, which is different than the traditional classical Arabic normally used for the translation of foreign shows.
Female viewers commented that they related to the character of “Noor” because they thought she was independent as an individual. In fact, she has a high profile job as a successful fashion designer and also as a wife and a mother. “Noor” presents a more moderate society, one that values traditions and family, but also gives freedom, power and independence to women, a huge change for the sometimes still oppressed Arab woman.
Psychologists agree that Arab women look up to “Noor” because of this and because she gives them hope and strength for the future. Some see that this shows that Arab citizens prefer a more moderate approach to Islam, rather than the conservative approach adopted in some Arab countries.
Despite the show's large popularity, it faced a lot of criticism and was marred by controversy. Conservatives stated that the show was against Islamic traditions, that it was immoral and encouraged dishonorable behavior. They saw that it encouraged drinking, sex and made corruption and murder 'seem normal'. Sheikh Abdel Aziz Bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh, the Highest Religious Authority in Saudi Arabia and head of the senior clerics' council warned that watching the show was 'Haram' for Musilms and that the soap contains "material which contradicts the principles of Islam… spreading evil, and having a devastating moral effect."
He also stated that its makers are "preachers for the devil and soldiers for Satan” and that "The series invites sin and even promotes it, depicting murder as being normal".
But no matter what anyone said, the show remained a huge success.Arab women fell head over heels in love with its main character Mouhannad (Noor's husband) played by actor Kivanc Tatlitu . Fans in Dubai went crazy when the actor recently visited the Emirate.
There were also reports that married Arab couples were divorcing because women were falling in love with the blonde hair, blue eyed actor. In a reported case a man divorced his wife after an argument when she said “I want to sleep with Muhannad for only one night and die afterwards.”
The 'Mouhannad' obsession made the actor a more popular star in the Arab World than in his native Turkey. Lebanese singer Roula Saad even featured him in her video clip for the hefty sum of $120,000.
Also, the names 'Noor' and 'Mouhannad' became the most popular names given to newborns in the Arab world this year.
The Noor frenzy pushed some people to capitalize and profit from the show's success. Gaza city's Jaro's clothing store saw its earnings rise heavily when it started selling copies of the blouses worn by 'Noor' on the show. Another vendor claims that he was selling over 500 'Noor' posters a day.
But the pandemic doesn't stop here. There has been a huge rise in the number of Arab tourists visiting Turkey. Saudi tourists are expected to reach 100,000 this year, a huge difference from last year's 41,000. The villa where the show was shot (the characters' house) was rented by a tour operator, which is offering tours of the house for enthusiastic fans.
Due to religious sensitivity, MBC rushed the show and aired its finale episode on August 30, before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. The finale showed 'Noor' writing in her dairies what happened to everyone in the past 13 years.
Although the show has ended, the 'Noor' fever is far from over. Fans are still blogging online and sharing their opinions about the show. Facebook groups were created for the show and 'Mouhannad's group, for example, is reaching 90,000 fans.
Evidently, MBC is very happy about the achieved ratings. After all, the show did make it the most popular Arab channel and established it as the undisputable broadcasting powerhouse. The channel's representatives expressed their joy about the show's success when actresses Songul Oden (Noor) and Ayca Varlier (Dana) visited Lebanon on September 8.
The only question remained to answer is now that the show is over, will “Noor-mania” continue?
